Hall of Famer Ron Mix of San Diego urges action to improve health and financial stability for former professional athletes.

SAN DIEGO, CA / ACCESS Newswire / May 15, 2026 / Pro Football Hall of Famer and attorney Ron Mix is raising awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by retired professional athletes, calling for stronger support systems and greater public understanding of life after sports.

Mix, who played in the NFL from 1960 to 1972 and later built one of the nation's leading legal practices representing former athletes, says the issue is both personal and urgent.

"I lived the life of a professional athlete," Mix says. "I also saw what happens after the game ends. Too many players are left dealing with long-term injuries and limited support."

The Reality Facing Retired Athletes

Professional sports careers are often short. According to the NFL Players Association, the average NFL career lasts just over three years. Yet the physical impact can last decades.

Studies have shown that:

  • Former NFL players are significantly more likely to suffer from chronic pain and joint issues

  • Many experience long-term neurological conditions, including cognitive decline

  • Medical costs can increase sharply after retirement, especially for those without sustained benefits

Despite the visibility of professional sports, many former athletes face largely unseen challenges.

"These are individuals who gave everything to their sport," Mix says. "But once they retire, the support doesn't always match the sacrifice."

A Legal Career Focused on Advocacy

After retiring from football, Mix began practicing law in 1975. In 2002, he founded the Law Offices of Ron Mix in San Diego, focusing on workers' compensation claims for retired athletes.

Over time, his firm handled cases involving athletes from every major professional sport across the United States.

"These cases were never just about legal outcomes," Mix explains. "They were about helping people secure benefits that could change their lives."

For more than 15 years, Mix held an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest recognition for legal skill and ethical standards.

Continued Work Through Leadership

Today, Mix serves as President of the Pro Football Retired Players Association, which provides health benefits to over 10,000 former players and more than 3,000 spouses.

"That work matters," Mix says. "It's about making sure former players have access to care and support when they need it most."

His return to legal practice in 2026 reflects a continued commitment to advocacy.

"I still believe in putting clients first," he says. "If you focus on that, you can make a real difference."

Why Awareness Matters Now

As more research emerges about the long-term effects of professional sports, awareness is becoming increasingly important.

Public understanding can influence:

  • Access to healthcare resources

  • Policy discussions around athlete protections

  • Support for organizations serving retired players

"When people understand the reality, they start to care," Mix says. "And when they care, things begin to change."

What Individuals Can Do

Mix emphasizes that raising awareness does not require specialized knowledge.

"Start by learning about the issue," he says. "Read, ask questions, and pay attention to what former players are saying."

He also encourages people to:

  • Support organizations that provide services to retired athletes

  • Share credible information about athlete health and post-career challenges

  • Recognize the long-term impact of professional sports careers

"Everyone can play a role," Mix adds. "Even small actions help build awareness."

A Call for Continued Focus

Mix believes the conversation around retired athletes is still evolving.

"This is not just about the past," he says. "It's about how we support people going forward."

His message is clear: awareness leads to action, and action leads to better outcomes.

"We can do more," Mix says. "And we should."
